From the dawn of the studio system to the decade it all came crashing down, Hedda Hopper was one of the Queens of Hollywood. Although she made her name as a star of the silent screen, she found her calling as a gossip columnist, where she had the ear of the most powerful force in show business the public. With a readership of 20,000,000 people, Hopper turned nobodies into stars, and brought stars to their knees. And in this sensational memoir, she tells all. In her career, Hopper crossed some of Hollywood’s biggest bold-faced names, from Joan Crawford and Bette Davis to Charlie Chaplin and Katherine Hepburn, and her feud with rival gossip columnist Louella Parsons became the stuff of legend. In The Whole Truth and Nothing But, we get Hedda’s side of the story—and what a story it is. Hedda Hopper is portrayed by Judy Davis in the Ryan Murphy TV series Feud.

I'm having trouble getting through this; I keep putting it down and then, as insanity dictates, picking it back up because I bought it and hate wasting money.
This is a depressing read so far. It seems that Ms. Hopper was not so much a gossip columnist, but one of those people who takes delight in finding the most appalling things possible about someone and showcasing only that. Every anecdote has some eventual turn down the rabbit hole of disappointment or disillusion. I certainly don't expect anyone to be perfect - that's another type of fantasyland - but this is one sordid view after another. I wish I'd known that in the author's opinion 'the whole truth' meant 'the bad truth only'.

The Whole Truth and Nothing But Hedda Hopper James Brough 9781631681219 Books Reviews

This book was truly a guilty pleasure. I had read an article or two about the legendary feuds between Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons. But this is my first glimpse of either of their saccharine sweet yet, caustic, venomous voices. How Hedda Hopper enjoys dropping those names! Once again, a glimpse into a world in which gossip columnists could make or break a career; where stars were truly luminous but utterly human; a world perhaps gone for good. Turn your literary expectation settings to "Low," and just enjoy.
This was a fascinating account of Hollywood. If you are interested in the early days, this is a good quick read.
Vintage tattle and snark, by one of the Grande Dames who started it all.
Arrived quite quickly, too.
Thank you!
This book was very enjoyable. I love anything old Hollywood about the stars and the beginnings of the business. Hedda does not disappoint whether she as an actress like in the women but directed by George Cukor or just stuttering out what's really interesting in her column this woman has led an interesting life. She will entertain you throughout this entire book I really loved it. And I read a lot of books of this genre you will not be disappointed.
Author, Hedda Hopper, talks about different people and events during her time as a columnist during Hollywood's golden era. The chapters on Marion Davies and Louise Fazenda were particularly touching. The chapter on Clark Gable was superb and it was interesting to read about touring overseas with Bob Hope. However, the chapter on the House Un-American Activities Committee and the denouncement of Communists was a bit hard to take with no mention of the innocent people who were blacklisted and lost their careers. Overall, a good look at Hollywood from someone who was there through it all.
Good author and writing ! Interesting Hollywood and stars information, a good summer read. Finding out about Hopper. An interesting person!
She shares her relationships with the Stars of Hollywood. I would recommend this to all !
In our time, we are unable to imagine the kind of influence that Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons had in the lives of most americans, from around the mid 1940's until the early 1960's. Similar to the influence that Walter Winchell had in his heyday, around the same era as Hopper and Parsons.
These were people who could build up and turn an artist/actor from a nobody into a famous and wealthy individual; by the same token, they could destroy a career with just some simple comments in their columns.
This great book takes you back in time to the golden era of TV and the movies, when glamour existed, and the studios ruled.
The stories, anecdotes and details that Hopper talks about in her book are priceless. This book should be number 1 in the list of books of anyone interested in that golden era. Her writing style is simple, conversational, and you feel as though she was in your living room, retelling you all those great tales.
